About NFMGThe mission of the North Fulton Master Gardeners (NFMG) is to educate our members and the public in the areas of horticulture and ecology in order to promote and foster community enrichment in cooperation with the Cooperative Extension Service, University of Georgia. If you have GARDENING QUESTIONS click here. What is a Master Gardener? Master Gardeners are residents of the local community who take an active interest in gardening and in sharing their knowledge with others. Master Gardeners must satisfactorily complete an intensive horticultural training program where they receive current research-based information from Georgia Cooperative Extension Service specialists, agents, and other horticultural professionals. In return for training, they volunteer time and expertise for community programs and activities. How do you become a Master Gardener? In Fulton County, applications are usually mailed in September, and applicant interviews are held in October. Upon acceptance into the program, a participation fee of about $115 is due for covering training costs including the Georgia Master Gardener Handbook (over 500 pages). The training class is conducted the following January through March. Fifty hours of volunteer service are required within the first year (twenty-five hours answering the horticulture hot-line at the extension office and twenty-five hours working in community garden projects). In subsequent years, twenty-five volunteer hours are required to remain an active Master Gardener. For an application, call the Fulton Cooperative Extension Office at 770-551-7670. How do you obtain membership to North Fulton Master Gardeners? A person who has completed the Master Gardener training program is eligible for membership. The $10.00 annual membership fee is due by January 31 of each year. Membership is renewable by mail using the membership form provided in the year-end Gardeners' Gazette or in person at the January general meeting.
